What's New in Shards of Mirrors Version - 0.0.7?
This update is about addressing some of the game mechanic issues I received feedback on. The emphasis is on mechanics for now; graphics will be updated later. If I missed anything or you have new ideas, let me know as always.
New Engine: Investments
I programmed a new module that allows investments in the game. It can handle everything from traditional investments to subscriptions, bribes, etc. — basically everything where you have to provide an initial collection of various resources, then contribute something daily to receive another benefit daily (upgrades included).
The first investment is a small kitchen that prepares food for the poor. You can find it just above the building block where your apartment is located in Rusttown. For some money, you can get a few food rations delivered to your home. It doesn’t solve the food problem entirely due to the low volume, but this is the mechanic I plan to use to decrease the need to grind items you consume frequently.
Repeatable Battles
In Winemaker’s Haven, where you defeated La Zorra and her gang in the tutorial questline, new bandits will appear every 20 in-game days. They will occupy the forest until you clear them out. Each victory grants some fame, plus the usual battle loot boxes if you are lucky.
Investment: Peasant Militia
Another example of the new investment engine: for a small amount of low-tier weapons and some money, the peasants will clear the forest themselves. This generates daily fame but makes the repeatable battle disappear.
Volunteers
The police vs. rebels battle was very tough if you lost too many soldiers in the tutorial battle, as there was no way to acquire volunteers, which are needed to recruit soldiers. After winning the repeatable battle once, a new location will appear in Winemaker’s Haven where you can spend your fame to recruit volunteers.
It uses the same engine as the shops; however, you can use fame instead of money to pay. This means that with some effort, you can basically recruit as many peasants as you want to win those quest fights.
Skippable Fight Animations
If you don’t want to see the animations after pressing “End of Turn,” just check the option box. It can be switched on or off during your turn, so it’s possible to skip, for example, the first few turns where no actual fighting happens.
New Shop
You can find a new shop in the Carlos Albán Square district. However, this place comes with a twist: the items Martin Schultz offers to sell — and wants to buy — change each time you visit. The prices are not very favorable, but if you want to get better weapons for your heroes when struggling with a fight, this is the place to go.
What the Future Holds
In the background, I am working on the 1st anniversary update, which will contain new mechanics, quests, and heroes. It will also let you take your first look inside the complicated politics and faction rivalries of Condor City.
